Director and Candidate Charlotte Mizzi Spends GLA Money for Summer Vacation
Withdraws $5,000.00 from GLA Account at Bank of the Rockies
Withdraws $5,000.00 from GLA Account at Bank of the Rockies
At the November 4th, 2019 Glastonbury Landowner's Association (GLA) Meeting, Director and 2019 candidate, Charlotte Mizzi, admitted to purchasing a $5,000.00 travel card by signing for a withdrawal from the GLA bank account at the Bank of The Rockies. Mizzi's vacation was in August 2019, when she flew to the Mediterranean island of Malta, her birthplace, for a three week stay. Mizzi acknowledged signing the withdrawal slip, but claimed the teller made an error. Mizzi stated that the teller "wrote in the GLA account number" on the withdrawal slip. Mizzi did not check her account or the slip for accuracy. When questioned by the GLA, Board Mizzi responded, "But the numbers are so small you can't even make them out."
Mizzi stated at the November 4th GLA Board Meeting, that "Charlene and Karleen took care of it and told me what happened. I did not know until I got back." Charlene Murphy is a former GLA Director and a Bank of The Rockies employee. Karleen McSherry is the GLA Administrative Assistant. It is not clear how the GLA was reimbursed for the missing $5,000.00.
GLA Treasurer Mark Seaver said at the same meeting that he noticed $5,000.00 was missing just a day or two after it happened. After sitting on the information for two and half months, Seaver finally stated "It needs to be made public. It needs to be noted in the record." Mizzi replied, " Is this because it's an election year? I don't know. What's the point? This was a savings account."
Director Seaver and Mizzi, Charlene Murphy and Karleen McSherry all knew about the missing $5,000.00 in August of 2019. It is not clear if other directors knew and why it took so long for the GLA Board to tell landowners.
Mizzi claimed that she contacted both the teller and the manager at the bank. The teller apologized for the error and the manager was sending a letter explaining that the Bank was responsible for the error. Mizzi, further stated "I assure that they must have put the GLA account number, I have no idea what it is."
In her duties as GLA Board Secretary, Director Mizzi has access to GLA checks which have an account number printed on the bottom. Mizzi was GLA President in 2016. One of her responsibilities then was to sign GLA checks.
A short while later, Director Mark Seaver and Director Charlotte Mizzi engaged in heated conversation. Seaver then resigned as GLA Treasurer and gave the bookkeeping computer to Mizzi. It appears that Mizzi is now in charge of all the GLA funds. Seaver did not have the monthly financial reports ready for the November 4th meeting, so none were issued.
Although the illegal withdrawal of GLA funds happened in August, landowners only learned about it on November 4th. The Forum contacted the Bank of The Rockies in Emigrant. They could not confirm Mizzi's claims. The Forum has also asked the GLA Board for a copy of the letter that Mizzi stated would be forthcoming from the Bank of The Rockies manager. If we receive a copy, we will publish it.
This is a developing story and the Forum will continue to follow it.
