Svend Andersen Passes on February 14, 2022
Svend Andersen, 89 years old, a longtime Glastonbury resident, passed away on February 14, 2022. Born in 1932 in Denmark, Svend eventually emigrated to Canada and then to America. Known for his witty conversation, excellent memory, and exemplary mechanical abilities Svend was appreciated everywhere he went. In his native Denmark Svend solved a complex exhaust problem at the shipyard where he worked. That won him a cash prize and brought recognition for his analytic and mechanical abilities. Svend also solved problems at the logging camp he later worked at in British Columbia. The spring rains made a mess of the logging roads and several trucks slid into ditches and one overturned. Svend orchestrated the massive cleanup and had it completed in less than a day.
Svend was one of the early residents of Glastonbury. He helped a group construct a bomb shelter in preparation for the apocalypse. But because he was not a financial contributor the group locked him out of the shelter on the night the bombs were supposed to fall. Svend spent the night sleeping outside in the cold mountain air. Thankfully the bombs never arrived.
Many people will remember Svend as a warm, friendly, and outgoing person who often shared stories with a steady stream of visitors to his modest home at the end of Capricorn in North Glastonbury. He shared that house with his newly married spouse, Donna Lash-Andersen. Together they entertained folks, made them feel at home, and ensured they left with fond memories. A few lucky folks were invited to delicious and homemade dinners on holidays.
Svend and Donna kept a large garden and often shared their bountiful harvests with friends. In 2021 they sold their Glastonbury home and moved to Tennessee. The sad news of Svend's passing will cause hearts to ache and tears to be shed by many in the Glastonbury community. He will be greatly missed.
