Greetings fellow North Glastonbury landowner:
Initially, I was not planning to “campaign” to any degree. But obviously you are getting this message, so you know how that turned out. I have seen a lot of propaganda hit my mailbox in the past few weeks and I think it’s necessary to say a few words. Much of what I have read is designed to stoke fear and divide. One letter speaks of a “hostile takeover” by wealthy individuals. I have spoken to many landowners, both for and against separation, and I have done my homework on candidates, and there is literally ZERO evidence of this claim. Hopefully this letter is not too late to make a difference.
Although fairly new to the GLA political landscape, I am not a newcomer to non-profit, association, or business board process. I have served on and led numerous boards including service organizations, professional organizations, charitable endowments, and multiple corporate entities. I am no stranger to addressing difficult challenges or working with difficult people.
Due to the breadth and length of my business and civic involvement, I understand how to manage an organization for long-term results. I have learned the art of balance between addressing immediate financial demands while also looking to future capital needs. Both are critical to the health of an organization.
The other thing that seems of vital importance is the consistent application of GLA By-laws and Master Plan. All landowners benefit from the impartial interpretation of the rules and a Board that responds swiftly when it becomes aware of violations of the rules. Additionally, in 2018 the GLA adopted two documents, Code of Conduct and Conflicts of Interest. All Board members are required to disclose conflicts and recuse themselves if a loyalty to another person or organization takes priority over the GLA. There are current Board candidates who could not, truthfully, sign that document. This should concern you as a landowner. I have no allegiance to any organization that poses a conflict of interest that would impair my ability to fulfil the fiduciary duty a director owes to all landowners.
• Separation should be a last resort; electing a competent and functioning Board is the priority
• Evaluating the need to increase assessments should wait until we fully pursue past due balances
• Every platted road in the community should be safe and maintained to GLA Standards
• GLA owns valuable land; a long-term capital plan should be developed to optimize this resource
• A “new landowner” welcome package should be developed to reduce inadvertent rule violations
I believe I possess the temperament, skill, and experience to serve the GLA. I appreciate your consideration. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or feedback. gill3602@gmail.com I welcome a conversation.
In addition to requesting a vote for myself, I support the following NG candidates for the Board:
Joe Bezotsky
Claudette Dirkers
Morgan Squires
And suggest a write-in for NG Ombudsman, Linda Ulrich.
Respectfully,
Douglas Gill, NG 69
Board Candidate
