South Glastonbury Community Split? Community Signs Cut in Half Overnight two Community of Glastonbury signs were destroyed by vandals. It appears that someone took a chainsaw to both. They cut out the word "Glastonbury" on the big welcome sign by Aquila Way. On Hercules, they sliced the sign in half. In both cases, just the word "Community" was left but "Glastonbury" was removed.
Over the years many landowners have voiced displeasure with the signs. They resented the name Glastonbury as it was chosen by Church Universal and Triumphant. They noted that Glastonbury has negative connotations in the wider Paradise Valley community. Many businesses will not provide services to Glastonbury residents or quote ridiculous prices for ordinary labor.
Before 1998 only CUT members were allowed to purchase land in Glastonbury. In North Glastonbury Park County land records show that about 35% of the landowners are original settlers; they purchased their land pre-1998 from CUT. In South Glastonbury just 10 to 15% of the landowners are original settlers.
The current lawsuit to dissolve the GLA may result in new names for both North and South Glastonbury.
The signs were installed around 1998 and had not been well maintained. Both were rotting and in bad shape. It is not clear if the GLA will replace them or wait to see if they are even necessary.
