Massive Fallen Tree Blocks High South Access via Hercules Road Around 12:45 pm on April 17, 2024, a massive Douglas Fir snapped at the base and fell across upper Hercules Road in High South Glastonbury. Almost six inches of heavy, wet snow fell overnight. The snow proved to be too much of a load for the tree to bear. GLA Director Tim Brockett stated that several landowners notified him by phone and email. One person was going to a doctor's visit and was forced to return home. Brockett said that he emailed the Glastonbury Landowners Association board and several directors immediately took action. Director Claudette Dirkers contacted Road Chair John Carp who quickly found assistance.
Brockett drove his Jeep from his home in High South with a saw and tow chains in the back. He quickly started trimming and removing heavy, snow-laden branches from the enormous downed tree. In 30 minutes enough branches were removed so he could pull his Jeep in close. He wrapped a chain around the end of the tree just as Dale from Standish Excavation arrived. Dale reported that Jeff, also from Standish Excavation would be arriving next with a front-end loader that was conveniently parked nearby. Brockett tried to pull the tree out of the road but without success. The tree was too heavy and the road too wet and muddy. Jeff arrived about 10 minutes later with a large front-end loader. Even that piece of equipment groaned when lifting the fallen Douglas Fir. But it succeeded and by 1:45 pm Hercules Road was clear and open to traffic.
