North Glastonbury Roads Are Heavily Eroded By Sunday's Rain
Landowner's money gets washed away
Uncontrolled water flowing down Gemini cut a fresh stream bed into this privately owned road.
Almost 1/2 inch of rain fell on Sunday and North Glastonbury gravel roads eroded quickly. Unfortunately the uncompleted 2017 Fall Grading and new 2018 Spring Grading contracts were both abruptly cancelled by the GLA Board in May 2018. The original contracts were replaced by a hastily written and poorly conceived contract that did not even specify gravel amounts for individual roads.
Water runoff issues are a huge problem and the engineer hired by the GLA Road Committee made many recommendations that were not even considered with the new contract.
Water pours off of Venus and cascades across Capricorn.
Venus Way was supposed to get new ditches and a culvert placed under Mercury so water could drain down the side of Venus and into an existing culvert under Capricorn. That project was not included and on Sunday cascading water eroded Venus Way and Capricorn Drive and washed away freshly placed gravel.
Fresh erosion on newly graded Gemini Road.
Driveway culverts were requested for the property on the left side of Gemini Road pictured above. Sunday's rain water flowed down the left side of Gemini and then was blocked by a driveway that does not have a required culvert. The water dammed and then washed across Gemini and eroded the freshly graded road surface.
Orion Way is a complete disaster with heavy erosion and serious potholes.
Orion Way was scheduled for normal maintenance before the contracts were cancelled. Sunday's rain turned the potholes into small swimming pools and made travel even more difficult for landowners. Director Charlene Murphy approved the original contract cancellations and voted for the replacement contract that omitted all work for Orion Way. Eight other directors agreed with her including Charlotte Mizzi, Richard Johnson(TJ) and Gerald Dubiel. Not one consulted with the Road Committee members who researched, wrote and walked the original contracts through the committee and Board approval and funding process.
Water pours down Mercury Lane and across Venus Way.
The engineer made specific recommendations for dealing with water problems on Mercury Lane and Venus Way. They were disregarded and Sunday's rain started to erode freshly graded Venus Way.
More rain is in the forecast for Monday. The damage to North Glastonbury roads will only increase. The GLA Board must get serious about solving water problems by requiring culverts for driveways that need them and acting upon the recommendations made by the engineer.
