High South Snow and Road Condition Report - Feb. 25, 2019 8:38 AM
Currently it is 6 degrees below zero and snowing lightly in High South.
When I drove home from Bozeman and up the mountain last night at 5 PM the snow was just starting to accumulate. I-90 was clear in the right lane and Bozeman Pass was fine. Turning onto Route 89 the snow was starting to pack and the bare asphalt lanes were shrinking. At Emigrant large patches of snow started to obscure bare asphalt. On Dry Creek road the entire pavement was covered in snow. Drifting was occurring by the unprotected section before Aquila with drifts 6 to 10 inches high. Coming up Hercules the conditions rapidly deteriorated.
The road is poorly marked and it was difficult to impossible to see where the ditches were. Once I ran into one but a quick stomp on the accelerator and momentum carried me back to the road surface. Past SpecTec the two inches of previous unplowed snow combined with 2 inches of freshly fallen snow. Parts of Hercules past SpecTec were drifting in. A large truck slid off the road by the waterfall property and was firmly planted in a deep and unmarked roadside ditch.
Overnight 4 more inches of fresh snow has fallen. The forecast seems to change every six hours with more and more snow expected to fall. Currently the National Weather Service is predicting 3 to 5 inches more on Tuesday, 1 to 3 on Wednesday and then tapering off towards the weekend.
Frances Owen's car is parked at the bottom of her driveway. On Friday she received a delivery of mail, dog food and perishables by snow shoe express. Her driveway is completely snowed in but Frances is safe and warm.
Please check on your neighbors by phone or email. Keep the bath tub filled with water in case the power goes out. Try not to venture outside until the temperatures rise above 10 degrees. Frostbite can happen quickly at lower temperatures.
It is supposed to briefly get above freezing on Thursday.
Stay safe and warm.
