GLA Board Members Disregard Bylaws Glastonbury Landowner's Association (GLA) President Dennis Riley proclaimed at the June 2019 Board meeting that he did not know what was in the Bylaws. That was a surprising admission of ignorance from the chief presiding officer. Board Secretary and former president Charlotte Mizzi chimed in that the Bylaws "do not say anything".
The conversation came about because Director Mizzi and Director Sedlak, both members of the Governing Documents Committee, were considering shortening the term of vacancy that resulted from recent resignations of two North Glastonbury directors. They wished to shorten the vacancies until the next election. To do so would be a direct violation of GLA Bylaw Article VI.E, which states: “Each person so elected shall be a member of the Board of Directors for the remainder of the term of the member whose term he is filling…”
Landowner Debbie Newby has filed a formal complaint detailing the problem and has proposed an acceptable solution.

GLA Board Answers Complaint with Ignorance and Condescension "You [Deb Newby] wasted everyone's time and money" Debbi Newby's formal complaint was answered by Board member Jerry Ladewig and approved by the GLA Board. Director and Complaint Committee chair Ladewig's response follows:
1. It would be good of you to be more patient. You are not going to get an immediate reply.
2. It would be good of you to change your demanding tone to one of request.
3. It would be good of you to recognize that board members have lives and other obligations and do not spend most of their time on Glastonbury issues.
4. It would be good of you to recognize that this is summer, people are at the CUT conference, and are traveling. This means they are less often checking their computers. (I am at my in-laws in Milwaukee with no internet and have to travel to the library to use email.)
5. Your complaint has no basis so you wasted everyone's time and money.
6. It would be good of you to realize that just because you disagree, it does not warrant a complaint.
7. The answer is the same: there was no violation as there is no such policy in place.
8. You won't get the form back as electronically it is in a format that I cannot use.
9. The letter approval vote: Yes-DR(Dennis Riley), JL(Jerry Ladewig), KH(Ken Hurley), AS(Andrea Sedlak), MS(Mark Seaver), NB(Newman Brozovsky), RJ(Richard Johnson); No-KN(Kevin Newby); Abstain-CM(Charlotte Mizzi)
Have a nice day. Jerry
It appears that the GLA Board has found a new way to discourage landowners from filing complaints. It is difficult to see how this approach builds community, fosters trust and leads to better communication between landowners and their elected representatives. Perhaps the voters will allow Director Ladewig and the Board members who agreed with her approach, to find new jobs where they can better employ their rhetorical skills.

The above quote adequately describes the deplorable state of the GLA, created and perpetuated by the current board of directors, excluding director Newby. Unfortunately, the GLA board has always been mostly composed of individuals who represent institutional interests and not the landowners as a whole. Label them the power mongers. The group consists of a minority of perceived leaders who wield power over weaker board members who blindly and obediently follow. In the past few years, landowners with opposing views and more worldly experiences have served on the board. They have been motivated to serve to bring a higher standard of association management and inclusiveness to the community. Label them the competent ones. When we had more competent representatives on the board there was greater volunteer landowner participation and sense of working together to better the community. That was a short-lived experiment in success as the competents chose to disconnect from the chaos brought on by the power mongers now in control. The power group has always attempted to marginalize any director from the competent group, as well as any landowner who expresses discontent or constructive criticism. They have a history of succeeding, which results in a situation described in this article from the American Management Association, "When the Bad Drives Out the Good". Although this article is written from the perspective of business management, the principles still apply to association management. The association after all is also a business and should be operated as one. The environment of managing the GLA has deteriorated to one where competents no longer desire to be part of a dying association, as evidenced by the association's failure to field and retain competent directors or candidates. There are currently two open seats on the board due to resignations that the board could/should have filled, but due to their ineptness and personality-driven squabbling did not. See: glastonbury.freeforums.net/board/79/2019-election-committeeWhen many members of a community no longer desire to be part of it, something needs to change! Change begins and ends with the association board members, their attitudes to be of service (not dictators), their willingness to represent ALL landowners equally, their duty to uphold the governing documents and law as it is written (not as they want it changed to be), and to give up their adversarial ways. Let's add incorporating integrity, transparency and accountability - all of which have been lacking for a long time, if not forever. The best solution to fixing a system as broken as the GLA is to dissolve it and start over from scratch!

Chris, you are gone now. The inaccuracies reflected above indicate the bias of the people involved. The above quote from Jerry Ladewig is contained in an email to Ms. Newby and is not the complaint reply. It is unfortunate that the administrator of this blog does not bother to get the facts. Ms. Mizzi & Ms. Sedlak did not attempt to change the election situation regarding filling an open vacancy. The Tim Brockett quote above is out of context. The Board did not know without looking it up how to proceed with the newly opened vacancy term. The matter was resolved. Mr. Brockett, you should tell the truth. And, you were not at that meeting. Your blog can mislead the vulnerable.

Is Jerry Ladewig "Fishy Girl," hiding behind a pseudonym? I believe it so. Your bloody drivel, full of classic projections, is indicative of your own biases and warped views. You and your ilk are the bad that drives out the good, as mentioned in my previous post. I leave Glastonbury knowing that positive change, or change of any kind for the better, is not possible with the historical and current leadership's attitudes and inconsistent application of the provisions within your governing documents. The GLA leadership continues to alienate and drive away many landowners, who may choose as I have to vote with their feet and their wallets and leave this place, or who will choose to not involve themselves with the sinking Ship of Fools. Not gone quite yet, Fishy Girl...but soon!
