The Cloud Over Paradise Valley
or Life in the Asylum in 1990
or Life in the Asylum in 1990
An astute Forum reader recently emailed us this link to an article written by Bill Shaw and Maria Wilhelm for People magazine. It was published in June of 1990.
The article is rich with history and well written. 1990 was a period when Church Universal and Triumphant(CUT) was preparing for the apocalypse which would usher in the Golden Age of Aquarius. Bomb shelters dotted Glastonbury and the CUT Ranch at Corwin Springs. Provisions were stockpiled and the CUT faithful were ready for nuclear war. When the war ended they would emerge from their shelters and repopulate the earth ushering in the Golden Age of Aquarius. They would save the planet and civilization.
The bombs did not fall. So despondent were some of the faithful, Erin Prophet wrote, that they started to decree asking the Ascended Masters to assist in the apocalypse. They prayed that the bombs would fall and millions would die so they could save the planet and become the future of a New Age civilization. Everyone survived though and the next day the sun shone brightly in a clear blue Montana sky.
Over the next ten years thousands of CUT faithful moved away and started life anew away from the insanity and bitter disappointment they experienced in Paradise Valley. In 1998 CUT opened Glastonbury to anyone who wanted to purchase land and the fate of a pure religious community was sealed. More faithful fled the valley. Newcomers started to buy land and by 2019 they outnumbered CUT faithful. The old timers still cling to power though and run the Glastonbury Landowner's Association for the benefit of CUT. Many have learned to hide their bizarre behavior and thoughts from newcomers. They often lie about their CUT affiliation and other matters. Many believe they are a part of a secret society. They communicate with code words and belive they are blessed with divine wisdom. They also believe that the newcomers are here to serve them and CUT with work and assessments. The inmates run the asylum and newcomers generally do their best to avoid them.
