Heavy Wet Snow blankets Glastonbury Roads
Six inches of heavy, wet snow has fallen in High South Glastonbury on Sagittarius Skyway. The temperature is currently 34 degrees and a heavy snow is falling. The snow is expected to taper off by late this afternoon.
The roads are wet, snow covered and slick. Sagittarius Skyway is barely visible through the falling snow and fog. Upper Hercules is almost as treacherous. Past SpecTec, Hercules widens and is easier to follow. But the sharp curves and winding road are quite slick. Coming back from the Post Office, I slid on several corners yet was only traveling at 15 mph. Water is flowing across lower Hercules due to clogged ditches. A 4 to 6 inch wide and deep channel, is washing away part of Hercules by the intersection with Dry Creek Road. Water is also washing across Hercules at several other spots before and after SpecTec. Hundreds of potholes have filled with water past Spectec on upper Hercules.
Dry Creek Road was covered with 4 inches of fresh snow. It is melting quickly on the paved portion, but corners are slick. Route 89 had twin tire tracks that were separated by 4 inches of slippery slush.
Please use extreme caution when driving on South Glastonbury roads. They are in bad shape and this storm will further degrade them. High South past SpecTec did not receive any normal road maintenance, grading or ditching, in 2019. Sagittarius Skyway has not received normal maintenance since 2018.
At the last GLA Board Meeting on May 4th, North Glastonbury (NG) Road Chair John Carp presented a Standish roadwork proposal for South Glastonbury. The suggested roadwork only went halfway to SpecTec in High South and was rejected by the GLA Board of Directors. The Board requested that another proposal be submitted that included roadwork in High South. That revised proposal should come to the GLA Board of Directors at the June meeting for a vote to authorize the spending of corporate funds.
NG Road Chair John Carp also noted that Standish had a 25% cost overrun on a North Glastonbury 2020 road invoice. The GLA Board asked for more information before authorizing that payment. That information is expected to be presented at the June GLA meeting.
