Verizon Signal in Glastonbury is Intermittent A Forum reader asked us to check into why the Verizon signal is intermittent in Glastonbury. He said that the signal was fine up by Mill Creek and down by Cinnabar. We asked around and discovered that Verizon is upgrading their towers to 5G. It sounded like they were doing one tower at a time. Many users reported having an intermittent signal in Glastonbury for the last two weeks. We also heard that Verizon is retiring older phones. But we could not find out which models or vintages.
Our calls to Verizon went unanswered.

It is true that the signal is very sporadic. No signal to one bar is not uncommon and has been going on for about 2 months. My old "flip" phone just quit working one day, so I went to the Verizon store in Livingston and was told that I had no choice but to upgrade. Verizon is offering a couple of "free" upgrades, so I am waiting for mine to be available. Concerning the tower, the answer was that they are upgrading to 5 G, but the person at the store indicated that she has been hearing that for the past 3 years. Could be a while. My next step is to talk to Verizon and demand a credit on my account. They also told me that I should consider using my WIFI for my phone service. But I'm paying them for service !!

The Forum researched why the Verizon signal is weak to nonexistent in Glastonbury. Verizon has not answered our questions so we went online. Here is what we found.
1) Many Verizon users across the country in rural areas are experiencing the same problem. And they are getting the same story from Verizon - we are doing a tower upgrade to 5G. Some rural residents have had unexplained poor coverage for two years or more. We could not discover why coverage was degraded but we did learn a little about cell phone technology changes by asking questions.
2) CDMA is an older technology like cassette tapes. It is also known as 2G or 3G; short for 2nd and 3rd generation. 4G technology is more sophisticated and allows for simultaneous transmission of voice and date. So you can browse the web and talk at the same time. CDMA is being slowly phased out by Verizon and other carriers. Many flip phones use CDMA technology, are for talking/texting only, and thus are not 4G LTE capable.
Verizon has stated “Virtually all traffic has already moved off our CDMA network onto our 4G LTE network. To facilitate a smooth transition to 4G LTE capable products and services, we are no longer allowing devices that are not 4G LTE capable to be activated on our network.”
3) Wink reports "AT&T says their customers can reactivate, transfer service to old iPhone 4,5’s, etc. until the 2022 deadline." Apple iPhone 4 and 5 use CDMA technology for voice and data. They do not support 4G technology.
T-Mobile says it is not currently making changes for customers with 3G or 4G non-HD voice devices. To see if your phone or device is eligible for their “Bring Your Own Device” program, click HERE.
Sprint says they are still allowing customers to activate, re-activate and transfer service to 3G devices. To see if your phone or device is eligible for their “Bring Your Own Device” program, click HERE.
4) Many users have Apple iPhone6. The operating system on iPhone6 was scheduled to end in 2020 with iOS13. However when we checked with several owners and our own iPhone6 we discovered that all had up to date Apple operating systems of iOS14. Once Apple stops providing software updates to any iPhone, that opens the phone to hackers, and creates a serious security risk. Check your iPhone to make sure you have iOS14 installed.
5) Apple iPhone5 does not support 4G or later cell phone technology. So it will become unable to work on the Verizon network in 2020. You can switch the carrier to ATT or Sprint/T Mobile. They will support iPhone5 for at least a year longer. Many people use ATT in Glastonbury. We could not find and Sprint/T Mobile users here.
6) 5G cell phone technology require a 5G capable phone. For now, different carriers still support CDMA, 2G, 3G and 4G technology. Until that changes, the older phones will still work with various carriers. Apple iPhones that do not have iOS14 installed are a security risk.
We hope this helps. As we learn more we will share it here.
