A Quiet Milestone is Reached in South Glastonbury
In 1997 Church Universal and Triumphant (CUT) owned every parcel of land in South Glastonbury. Some parcels they owned completely while others they leased to approved church members. After the Restated Covenants of 1997 lessees were allowed to purchase land in a process call "fee simple". It was anything but simple and many CUT devotees were more than a little upset.
The Glastonbury Landowner's Association (GLA) became responsible for Glastonbury road maintenance, plowing and zoning in 1998. All GLA Board members were also CUT members. Not surprisingly many saw their GLA mission as one to enable and enrich CUT by helping it to develop Glastonbury. CUT made big promises and dangled those in front of GLA Board members. CUT would build a village center. It would house local businesses, there would be a CUT church, a recreation building and lots of community facilities. In High South a park was envisioned with a lake and skating rink. CUT would also give back the property they removed from South Glastonbury via the Restated Covenants appendix. South and North Glastonbury would become self sufficient communities. The process would start as soon as the GLA Board could develop a Land Use Master Plan (LUMP).
In 2007 the Master Plan was finished and approved by Glastonbury landowners. The South Glastonbury Village Center was never built. The lands CUT removed were not returned. Rather they were sold to Mountain Sky a few years ago for millions of dollars and the GLA did not receive a dime. Then in May of 2021 the last CUT owned parcel under the legal jurisdiction of the GLA, was sold to a private landowner. The dream was finally shattered as CUT squeezed the last bit of profit out of its massive land investment.
But there is still money left for CUT. Many original landowners will give their property to CUT in their wills. CUT has a special squad that visits ageing members and "shows them" how to will their land to the church. As more old timers pass on, CUT will have a few more parcels to reap profits from.
The spiritual dream is over and South Glastonbury will never be the earthly home of Ascended Masters. South Glastonbury has become a vacation retreat for the well heeled and eventually will resemble places like Jackson Hole and Aspen. The "Spiritual Dome" that connected South Glastonbury to North Glastonbury has been irretrievably shattered. In due time South Glastonbury landowners will legally divorce themselves from CUT and North Glastonbury. Physically and spiritually the divorce has already happened for the vast majority of landowners. Now the courts need to catch up.
