Wildfire smoke to hang around for the near future The Livingston Enterprise reports: "Wildfire smoke drifting in from big fires in Oregon and central Idaho mixed with smoke from area fires to obscure much of the viewscape in Park County this morning, according to the National Weather Service.
About seven fires are burning across Oregon and Idaho, with another handful in Montana, according to InciWeb, a website that acts as a multiagency clearinghouse for active fire information across the country. As of this morning, the largest are the Bootleg Fire, in southern Oregon, at about 39,000 acres; and the Dixie-Jumbo Fires, in Idaho’s Nez Perce National Forest, at more than 11,000 acres.
High elevation wind running from west to east brought the wildfire smoke into the area, where it ran into local mountain ranges and filtered into the valleys, said Todd Chambers, NWS meteorologist.
Chambers said a small cold front in eastern Montana caused lower elevation winds to push fires from Billings into the western Montana foothills, contributing to the local smoke.
Temperatures on the West Coast are expected to remain well over 100 degrees, Chambers said, which means the wildfire smoke ought to stick around for the foreseeable future."
