Firefighters respond to Cottonwood Fire north of Gardiner
The Livingston Enterprise reports:
"A new fire on the Custer Gallatin National Forest was reported at about 3 p.m. Thursday up Cinnabar Basin in southern Park County, according to a U.S. Forest Service news release.
Cinnabar Basin is located in the Gardiner Basin, about 10 miles north of Gardiner. The fire is burning about 3 miles up Cinnabar Basin from the Yellowstone River and U.S. Highway 89 South and is about one mile south/southeast of Yankee Jim Lakes and Sphinx Mountain near Cottonwood Creek, the release said.
The Forest Service said the fire is 15 to 20 acres in size and the cause is under investigation.
About 15 people are working the fire, with the help of two helicopters, an air tanker and air attack, the release said.
No structures are threatened by the fire at this time. Private property is less than a mile away from the fire, according to the release.
Members of the Custer Gallatin heli-rappel crew, two helicopters, airtanker, engine crew members, and smokejumpers are responding to the fire, the release said.
The Forest Service reported that Thursday begins a warming and drying trend anticipated to last through mid-next week. The fire is burning in grass, sagebrush, and timber. Park County, meanwhile, posted to Facebook early Thursday evening encouraging the public not to call dispatch unless they have an emergency.
“They are aware of the fire and are currently coordinating the response,” the county’s post said.
The public is being asked to avoid the area while fire crews are responding. The county posted that firefighters were expected to be on scene through the night with additional resources expected to arrive in the morning."
