Deputy vehicle totaled in I-90 crash The Livingston Enterprise reports: "A Park County deputy sheriff dodged disaster Wednesday afternoon as he offered roadside assistance to a stranded motorist on Interstate 9 0 between Livingston and Bozeman.
Deputy Sheriff Jeff Jackson was the first responder to the scene near mile marker 335, where a BMW had slid off the road into a ditch due to dangerous, icy road conditions, Park County Sheriff Brad Bichler said.
Traffic slowed traveling eastbound on I-90 as most motorists used extreme caution while passing the accident scene.
But a semi-truck came down the interstate, lost control when it hit the ice, and smashed into Jackson’s patrol vehicle parked on the side of the road, the sheriff said Thursday.
“Deputy Jackson had to run,” Bichler said. “He was struck by the tractor trailer and knocked down into the snow. He ended up under the trailer.”
The impact of the collision totaled Jackson’s patrol vehicle, but the deputy sheriff emerged uninjured.
“He was checked out at the scene and not injured, but very fortunate that he was not seriously hurt or killed,” said Bichler. “He was pretty shook up from a very close call.”
The accident clogged eastbound traffic on I-90 as authorities worked to complete their investigation and clear the scene.
“We need the public to understand it’s dangerous out there, especially on I-90, and it’s horribly dangerous when we are out of our vehicles,” said Dann Babcox, fire chief for Park County Fire Rural District #1. “Please be careful when you see an accident to ensure the safety of our responders and the public.”"
