Starbucks Coming to Livingston - Paradise Valley Goes Upscale
The Livingston Enterprise reports:
"Starbucks is opening a new location in Livingston at 2000 W. Park St. in the old Arby’s location near the Albertsons grocery store, a company spokesperson confirmed Friday morning.
The location is expected to open next winter and employ about 20 people, the Starbucks spokesperson wrote in an email.
Mathieu Menard, Livingston planning director, said that since Starbucks is going into an existing building without changing the exterior, the company doesn’t need to file for any permits aside from signage. Starbucks has not yet filed for any signage permits, Menard said, but noted that a contractor has contacted the city about infrastructure on the site.
Independence Construction Co. of Virginia is soliciting bids from contractors for a “Starbucks #67837 Livingston” project on its website. When reached by phone Friday morning, a company representative declined to speak about the project. ICV’s website states that the company develops and renovates “building projects for some of the nation’s best-known brands and employers.”
The building sits on a nearly 1-acre property and was first constructed in 1994, according to real estate data available on Montana Cadastral. As of the 2021 tax year, the land and building were valued at $742,374, state data show.
The property is owned by a limited liability company that shares an address with Legend Partners, a commercial real estate company with offices in Salt Lake City and Denver. Rob Sweeney, commercial real estate broker with Legend, directed questions to a representative of the “owner/development group,” Chris Hatch. As of press time, Hatch had not responded to an emailed request for comment.
Leslie Feigel, CEO of the Livingston Area Chamber of Commerce, said she worries about the impact a Starbucks might have on local coffee shops and expressed concern about whether the company supports the military or the police. Christina Nelson, who does bookkeeping for some local coffee shops, said Livingston already has a variety of small coffee shops that meet resident and tourist needs, pointing out that the town is not in need of an international coffee franchise.
Cathy Johnson has owned Coffee Creek Espresso, a coffee hut in the Alberstons parking lot, for 19 years. The hut is a stone’s throw from the old Arby’s building and is the only Coffee Creek location. Johnson said she has no plans to relocate, in part because she has a lease with Albertsons.
“Obviously I’m not happy because it will affect my business,” Johnson said. “It’s frustrating in a small town being a small business and having the big people come in. We’ll just see what happens.”"
