Nearly 3 million people visited Glacier National Park in 2022? KBZK reports misleadingly that nearly 3 million people visited Glacier National Park in 2022. Unfortunately, they are relying upon misleading data from the National Park Service(NPS). A more accurate headline would be "Almost 3 million visits recorded at Glacier National Park in 2022". Traditionally NPS counts the number of vehicles and people within them every time they enter a park. So a family of four who spends two days at Glacier and sleeps outside the park gets counted as eight visitors. If they leave the park for gas, groceries, etc every time they come back they are counted again. Thus the 3 million number represents the number of incoming visitors that pass by all entrance stations to Glacier National Park. The number of unique visitors is most likely a small fraction of the total number. Bigger numbers sound better when NPS asks for taxpayer funding every year.
Here is the KBZK article "Nearly 3 million people paid a visit to Glacier National Park in 2022, keeping it among the top 10 most visited national parks.
Numbers released on Tuesday show a total of 2,908,458 recreation visits for the year.
Park officials note that the number of visitors dropped 5.6% from 2021, mainly due mostly to a drop in visitation in January, March, April, October, November, and December. However, monthly records were set for February and September.
Glacier National Park has consistently hosted around 3 million visitors each year for the last five years — except in 2020 due to pandemic-related closures."
