Letter From Senator Steve Daines...
Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a great victory for freedom in America and Montana. In this important ruling, the Court protected our First Amendment right to Freedom of Speech, which includes the freedom not to speak.
The case the Court heard involved Lorie Smith, a graphic designer in Colorado who did not want to create a website for a same-sex wedding because doing so would conflict with her faith. Simply put, she wanted to be able to make creative designs consistent with her beliefs—and the Supreme Court said the First Amendment allows her to do just that. This historic decision is consistent with conservative bedrock Constitutional principles, and further protects our way of life and the values we hold dear here in Montana.
As Justice Neil Gorsuch points out in the majority opinion, ‘The First Amendment envisions the United States as a rich and complex place where all persons are free to think and speak as they wish, not as the government demands.’
