In my September 7th 2015 open letter to the GLA board and membership I outlined how the GLA board nefariously controls who is allowed on the board. Despite the fact that we have elections the GLA board of directors has created such a toxic environment the only members who will run for the board are those who are entrenched in groupthink, the Church Universal and Triumphant, and Valerie O’Connell. The current mindset of the GLA board of directors is to ensure that Valerie is not elected at all costs. So during elections we are given four choices for three open positions. Three of those choices have been abject failures as board members including one “reverend” with the Church Universal and Triumphant, and the other choice is Valerie. (In my opinion I would rather have Valerie on the board than what we have now) This creates a situation where in order to maintain the failed status quo, or control, Ross Brunson was forced to run for the board again knowing that he was running for another two year term with the plan to resign so that the board could once again control one of the seats on OUR board for another two years. All of this is in the face of several landowners calling for Ross’ resignation prior to the November meeting.
Between the election in middle November 2015 to Jan 2016 or approximately 60 days into his 730 day term or 8% of his term Ross Brunson resigned his newly elected position. This is where landowners are marginalized. On March 14th the GLA board of directors will appoint whomever they wish to fill the remaining 92% of Ross Brunson’s term. There will be no landowner say in whom is elected other than the 11 remaining board members. It is my understanding that 9 of the remaining 11 have direct connection to the Church Universal and Triumphant. I find this practice to be a disgusting affront to landowners who have a right to freedom FROM religion and those who would oppress based on their religious beliefs. Especially considering the issues that will have to be addressed with the church regarding back assessments and a uncontrolled 176 acre parcel owned by the church in North Glastonbury. The majority of this board has a direct conflict of interest specifically with these two issues.
What some of us have observed as this has happened over and over again is that someone who has never or rarely comes to meetings and has zero interaction with the board is brought forth as a candidate by the board and is generally overwhelmingly elected by the board. As Valerie O’Connell correctly pointed out over half of our board was appointed by the prior to the November elections. So we get abject failures like Rudy Parker or Charlotte Tizzy controlling the business of our association. Both were appointed and one is now the president the other the treasurer. Both are a disaster to this association in my opinion.
The obtuse behavior on the part of our board is only fueling the discontent of landowners and teeing up further litigious action. This board of directors has it within their discretion to hold a special election for this board position. I am calling on the board to have a special election for this position considering the circumstances surrounding Ross Brunson’s resignation instead of appointing someone.
I am unsure what my level of engagement will be at the March 14th meeting but I think it would behoove all of us to attend this meeting and demand that this board cease this unstated policy of board control and allow members to be heard through the democratic voting process.
