Truck slides off Gemini Hill Road - Guardrails Not Installed On March 7, 2024, a truck towing construction materials partially slid off Gemini Road in North Glastonbury. The construction worker was bringing materials up Gemini Hill when the truck and trailer jackknifed on the slick, snow, and ice-covered road. No one was injured. The truck was hanging off the step embankment and was eventually pulled back onto the road.
This is the latest in a series of vehicle slide-offs on Glastonbury roads. In one case the vehicles rolled over and down a steep embankment before coming to rest on its roof in a horse pasture. Another vehicle dove off the road and slid down a snow-covered embankment for 100 feet before coming to rest against a stand of trees.
In 2022 the GLA Board directors Claudette Dirkers and Tim Brockett studied the problem of dangerous and unprotected roads in Glastonbury. They created maps of steep embankments, measured distances, and studied barrier solutions. Then they convinced the GLA Board to purchase lightly used guardrails, posts, and hardware for 90% off the retail price. The guardrail was delivered to one location in High South. The rest was scheduled to be delivered to Gemini Hill and several spots along Hercules Road so it would be prepositioned for spring installation. The Annual election replaced Brockett and Dirkers and the project languished with the new board. The guardrail was left on the property of Standish Excavation where it remains today.
In January both Director Dirkers and Brockett voted to approve funding for emergency guardrail repair along Hercules Road in South Glastonbury. Guardrail installation promises to be a major GLA road maintenance issue this year.
