Director Leslie Everett Resigns From the GLA
On June 7th, 2024 Director Leslie Everett resigned from the Glastonbury Landowners Association (GLA) board. Everett noted that "Circumstances have changed and I am no longer able to serve out my elected term as a director". She gave no further clue as to what circumstances had changed and why she was stepping down from Chairman of Governing Documents and the board. She was a member and impromptu leader of the Gang of 7; a group of directors who often voted as a bloc. They included Directors Alicia Roskind Dearing, Leslie Everett, Jaylyn Jensen, John Carp, Scott Stomerowski, Jack Sutton, and Jewel Wieczorek.
Leslie Everett was elected by the 2023 GLA board to fill a vacant director's seat. She ran in the 2023 Annual Election and earned more votes than any other candidate in South Glastonbury. Her solid victory won her a two-year term on the board. Director Everett often stated that she wanted to bring "professionalism" to the GLA.
The 2023 GLA Board suffered from a strong pattern of dysfunction. Nine members resigned. Few people wanted to run for the board. The 2023 board instituted a 20-vote edict in an attempt to block minority candidates from winning a seat. After many landowners complained the edict was dropped. Were it not for two write-in candidates, Claudette Dirkers and Doug Gill, and the recension of the 20-vote edict, the 2024 board would have had just six of twelve seats filled. Dysfunction continued with the 2024 board. Two officers resigned in January; President Alicia Roskind Dearing and Treasurer Jewel Wieczorek. Then Jayln Jensen resigned from two committees. Jensen has since been elected President of the GLA.
The gang blocked Director Brockett's request to become Treasurer or Secretary. They voted him down when no one else volunteered for those critical positions. As a result of not having either position filled GLA Financial Reports are sporadic and inaccurate. Payment verification and Project Review fees are often difficult to track. Minutes were discontinued by the 2023 board after September 2023. Only a few of the 2024 board meetings have published complete Minutes.
Before Director Everett quit she was able to rewrite the 2018 draft Road Policy and refer it to the Road Committee for their comments. Everett's version harkens back to the 1980s when Church Universal and Triumphant ruled Glastonbury and refused to provide road service to residents in higher elevations. Everett added text to the Road Policy that urged landowners in High North and South to invest in snowshoes and consider forming a local group to finance local snow plowing.
Ironically Everett led the effort to prevent empty director seats from being filled. She claimed that "ten directors were enough to run the GLA". Now the board has nine directors. Bylaw changes make it unlikely that more will be appointed before the Annual Election. The GLA officer positions of Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary remain unfilled. The Elections, Compliance, Governing Documents, and Finance Committees lack a chairman and in some cases even members. The Annual Election is rapidly approaching. Last year Nomination Forms were approved at the June board meeting and mailed in early July. The 2024 Elections Committee does not have a chair and has not yet held a meeting this year. The Finance Committee suffers the same plight. Collecting past-due assessments has not taken place in over two years. The Compliance Committee has yet to hold a meeting as the stack of unresolved complaints grows larger and more dangerous. Gunshots were fired in North Glastonbury this week as one compliant situation started to spiral out of control. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
The GLA will hold its June monthly board meeting via Zoom on Wednesday, June 26 at 7 PM. The Meeting ID is 619 079 2223. The passcode is 2023. The call-In Phone Number is +1 720 707 2699.
