Happy July 4th - from Elizabeth Clare Prophet
In 1988 Elizabeth Clare Prophet of the Church Universal and Triumphant gave a resounding and inspiring July 4th speech titled "The Cause of Religious Liberty
and Defending Our First Amendment Rights". The speech moves through history from a gruesome scene in the Inquisition to the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth Rock to the former Church headquarters in California to 1988 and Paradise Valley in Montana. The oratory is rich with history and centered around American 1st amendment freedoms, especially the freedom of religion. Elizabeth Clare Prophet speaks derisively of the enemies who wish to persecute church members and take their land. The Church was forced to move from California because of enemies and in July 1988 the enemies of the Church are once again on the march. She fosters a strong "us vs them" narrative. Enemies are everywhere. The forces of darkness roam the earth while the light bearers carry the true voice and spirit of God. A classic good vs. evil theme that was well received by an enthusiastic and large audience. Part history and part battle cry the speech was presented to thousands of believers at their annual festival in early July at the Ranch.
The Declaration of Independence, which is what July 4th is all about, is mentioned. The author, Thomas Jefferson, is seen as a fallen master and thus his name is never spoken nor is he given his due praise.
The US Constitution is praised and Glastonbury is mentioned a few times in the speech. No mention was made of what the Church actually practiced via the Glastonbury 1982 Covenants. Those rules allowed the Church to seize your property and sell it. They prohibited the practice of any other religion besides the "official" one. Free speech was banned and people who dissented were routinely kicked out of the community. Their Constitutional and God given rights were disregarded. Harmony was enforced with an iron fist.
Human nature has not changed much over the course of history. Lofty ideas have a perverse way of leading to pain, misery, poverty and premature death. Perhaps the time has arrived for a fresh look at The Teachings and discovering a new approach to creating harmony in Glastonbury. The July 4th speech by Elizabeth Clare Prophet is rich with irony and enlightening. We hope you enjoy reading it and learn from it.
