At 9:15 PM on August 18th, 2016 I drove up Dry Creek and noticed a small fire burning in the hills by Leo Lane. I then drove up Arcturus and saw the flames about 200 feet above the road on the top of a grassy hill. The fire looked about 1 - 2 acres in size. The flames were up to 4 feet tall. I then drove over to Libra off of Hercules. Climbed a hill by the end of Libra. I looked down the mountain but could not see the fire. I did see a fire truck trying to access it. Tress around Leo Drive blocked my view.
The air is cool and still so I do not think the fire will spread tonight. But if it gets hot and windy tomorrow everyone should be prepared.
If anyone in Low South can provide photos and/or updates that would be greatly appreciated. Please post below or email to the Forum at glastonburycommunityforum@gmail.com

South Glastonbury Fire is Contained The Forum spoke with the Emigrant Fire Department Chief Michael Story this morning via email. Chief Story reports that the fire was caused by lightening and with the help of locals was contained by 10 PM last night. Hopefully the rain and continued vigilance will extinguish the fire completely.
Walter Wunsch, owner of SpecTec and property in High South, has provided more information to the community and GLA Board via the High South email list. Below are his comments regarding the large cistern on the corner of Hercules and Polaris that the GLA installed many years ago. He has also volunteered to reopen the idea of building a small pond further down Hercules on property owned by SpecTec.
There is a 100 gallon per minute high capacity well on the other side of Hercules that could be used for fire emergencies. The Forum suggests that the GLA research the cost of installing a full flow hydrant. Permission will be needed from the property owners as the well is on private property.
Walter Wunsch's comments follow:
1] CISTERN at Polaris and Hercules. Since Phillip Hoag and myself as GLA board members at the time installed the tank, I will gladly volunteer to take the lead in bringing it up to date, if possible. The fire department has a key or had it and used the tank during the 2006 fire. I do not know if it was refilled. The fire chief agreed to come up and inspect it next week. I suggest that Dennis and myself meet him. We should also discuss with him the feasibility of a small pond next to the Golmeyer Creek culvert within our property easement on Hercules. I helped install such a pond more than 12years ago. However, it was abandoned due to liability concerns of people accidentally driving into it. If someone else can volunteer to readdress the liability issue, as this would be the basis of making this happen again, if possible.
2] 100GPM well on Frances property. She does not own it any longer. Lisa Bartlett does. However, it does not have a hook-up, only a small garden hose. It would take a substantial investment to make it happen.
