High South Snow and Road Condition Report - Dec 27, 2016 5:30 PM
Currently it is 17 degrees, and lightly snowing in High South Glastonbury. Since Christmas Eve 6 inches of snow has fallen. During the evening of the 26th the winds picked up substantially and continued into today. Gusts up to 50 mph blew the freshly fallen snow into gullies and created moving drifts. Like sand dunes in a desert they have grown and crept across the landscape.
At 3 PM I drove to the Post Office and through several foot deep drifts on Sagittarius Skyway. Upper Hercules was plowed but rapid drifting narrowed the road from two lanes to just one. Past SpecTec Hercules was clear all the way to Route 89. No SpecTec employees were seen stuck on the way down or when I came back up Hercules. Evidence of heavy drifting was apparent on the intersection of Libra and Hercules and where Arcturus enters Dry Creek. Dry Creek was mostly clear with little drifting. Route 89 was excellent; no drifts and a clear pavement.
On the way back I met Myron Moorman from High South with his new rig. Myron is graciously helping to plow the roads in High South.

Coming up the dirt portion of Dry Creek and up lower Hercules was normal. The road was freshly plowed all the way to SpecTec and easy to traverse. At SpecTec I met Fred Counts. His big orange plow hit a boulder yesterday and he lost part of his cutting blade. So he was back to driving the GLA snow plow which he just replaced the power steering pump on. He also fixed the sander which is now working fine.

I followed Fred through the upper Hercules canyon and on up Sagittarius Skyway. He powered the GLA rig through several 12-18 inch drifts and sometimes backed up to take another swipe or two. I left him when I turned into my driveway. Fred continued to plow upper Sagittarius Skyway and then widened Sagittarius Skyway below my house. The roads in High South should be fine for awhile. The high winds are expected to continue overnight. Tomorrow morning the roads may be drifted in again.
Drive safe and be careful. Blowing and falling snow is limiting visibility and making it so much easier to get stuck.
