BILLINGS -
A major snow-making storm is taking aim at Montana late this weekend.
On the positive side of the weather, the temperatures will be moderating and are beginning to warm up already.
Keep in mind our average high temperature for this time of year in Billings is 36°, but the temperatures this weekend and next week will only be getting into the high teens and low 20’s.
The Riverton Wyoming National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for most of Northwestern Wyoming.
The watch goes into effect Saturday night and last through Tuesday morning at 5 a.m.
Snowfall amounts could be impressive anywhere from 10 to 18 inches of snow in the valleys around Yellowstone Park and 1 to 3 feet of snow in the mountains.
The Billings National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Beartooth and Absaroka Mountains from Saturday night through Thursday morning at 6 a.m.
Snow accumulations could get up to 2 to 4 feet with the greatest amount on the West facing slopes, including the mountains around Cooke city.
Plus the winds are expected to gust up to 40 mph out of the southwest during this storm.
The earliest computer models for this event show that significant snow is possible for south central Montana with moderate measurable snow all the way to Glendive in the eastern edge of the state.
It is too early to suggest an estimated snow total for Billings and vicinity, but just know it could be a significant snow event that will be lasting through most of next week.
BILLINGS FORECAST
Tonight: Partly cloudy and windy with patchy blowing snow. Southwest winds 20 to 35 mph gusting to 50 mph. Wind chill readings of -10 to -20°. Low 1°.
Saturday: Mostly sunny and still windy. Southwest winds 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph the morning. Lowest wind chill readings of -10 to -20° in the morning. High 17°.
Sunday: Mostly cloudy with a 30% chance for snow in the morning and again in the afternoon. West winds 10 to 20 mph in the morning becoming easterly 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. High 16°.
