Administrator's note: Sally Muto from North Glastonbury requested that we post her letter of November 30th, 2015 to the GLA Board here. Sally presents several ideas and anyone may post comments below. It is our hope that these ideas can be nourished and brought to fruition via helpful comments and posts.
Dear Board of Directors,
In contemplating the up coming new year for our Association I would like
to make a suggestion, which you may or may not agree with.
Before ANY changes to our governing documents or any expenditures we
should come to a screeching halt! If this Corporation was run like a
business, which it should be, until the Board has finished reviewing what
the ACTUAL income of the Corporation is it can't move forward.
There should not be any more spending, or planed spending, on ANYTHING
except maybe on another truck for snow plowing. It's not about kids
getting to school or getting to work, but about emergency vehicles being
able to reach landowners in life or death situations.
For to many years the Board of Directors and landowners have neglected the
main issue that drives any business...INCOME. Knowing your bottom line is
the basis of all operations. Debbie Blais and others have shown that all
of us, landowners and Boards alike, have been negligent in our
responsibilities.
We all have our own special interests in furthering our association along.
But, ALL OTHER INTERESTS AND OPERATIONS SHOULD STOP IMMEDIATELY until
everyone's time and energy is put into getting our assessments
straightened out.
How can we move forward without having a correct income baseline? Other
than paying our current liabilities and road maintenance...STOP!
No more taking time and spending energy on ideas that may or may not be
fulfilled. Software issues, common area development. Or what else may
come up for discussion.
EVERY BOARD MEMBER AND VOLUNTEER should put their energy into getting this
Corporation on a sound financial footing before discussing anything else!
Period!!
At every committee meeting or Board meeting I've either been to or
listened to it ALWAYS comes back to, "where do we get the money?" That
should tell us something.
Every financial report given so far there is ALWAYS "well that's not
correct."
I personally do not pay attention to Draft Budgets because in my opinion,
and that is just me personally, is not fact based and has no merit until
things are corrected.
Having EVERYONE focused on our financials, helping or investigating, the
sooner we as an association can make long term plans. Every Board member
and landowner will get a lesson on how our Corporation (business) should
work when the FINANCIAL HEALTH is looked after.
How else can we possibly come up with long term solutions for anything?
Without a comprehensive knowledge of our income or what it should be it
makes all the committees useless, with the exception the road committee.
Our income is derived from landowners and how they have developed their
property and that only. So, as soon as we re-organize our thinking on how
to run this business the quicker we can do the Corporations business and
with more harmony. Financial problems are causing our marriage to become
very contentious!
With all due respect to Rudy, who I thank for even volunteering to do this
job, has neither the time required or the background to handle the
comprehensive undertaking it will require to deal with back and current
assessments that need to be brought under control. We need someone on the
Board, preferably retired, who has a financial background. Having an
accountant will not be able to deal with our assessment situation.
Volunteers could be used for some of the legwork, but some of the current
Board members have shown disdain for volunteers.
Having said that...may I remind you that it was volunteers who brought the
current financial situation to your attention along with other areas of
concern.
Thank you for your time,
Sally Muto NG
