Sand Hut Road Under Construction
A new road to the Glastonbury sand hut was approved by the GLA Board last week and is now under construction. The Quonset style sand hut is located just off the paved section of Sirius Drive after the Story Road intersection in North Glastonbury. When the hut was installed, a road was not included. Over the years heavy trucks dug deep twin ruts into the wet ground when picking up or delivering sand. The road finally deteriorated so badly that plow trucks were getting stuck and new sand could not be delivered.
The Road Committee first addressed the problem in early January of 2018. They devised a plan and submitted it to the GLA Board for approval. The road was funded for $9,500.00 and work started almost immediately by Chad Standish Excavation. As weather permits progress will continue.
The 14 acres that the sand hut sits on is fully owned by the GLA. The new road will allow year round access and have a wide turn around for sand hauling trucks. They will no longer have to back out into oncoming traffic on Sirius Drive. As funds permit more storage will be added for sand so the Road Committee can purchase a year's supply in August and keep it dry. Wet sand freezes and will not feed through the snow plow truck's sand spreader. Most suppliers store their sand outside so dry sand is difficult to purchase in mid-winter.
To save money, dirt and rocks are being removed from a Capricorn embankment that was scheduled to be pushed back later this spring. The push back is needed to improve drainage on the gravel portion of Capricorn Drive. Standing water permeates the road base, softens it and thus allows pot holes to easily form. Pot holes collect more water and drivers suffer along with the road.
The 14 acre parcel will have an excellent road which will allow for more sand storage and further development. Eventually Glastonbury landowners may decide to build a small community center or other facilities along with additional parking. The new road is an investment in our community now and for the future. The Road Committee will be assured of a steady dry sand supply which can be purchased in bulk once a year. Landowners will save money on sand purchases and be assured of dry sand for slippery roads throughout the winter.
