Montana Roads Get an Extra $6.2 Million
from an increase in the State Fuel Tax
from an increase in the State Fuel Tax
Last year the Montana legislature voted to raise the state tax on vehicle fuel; up 4.5 cents for gasoline and 1.5 cents for diesel. The money collected is now being distributed to Montana counties and cities. It will help deal with a large backlog of road repairs. You can expect to see more delays on Montana roads this summer, known locally as road repair season, but the roads will be getting better.

There is talk in Washington DC of raising the federal fuel tax. If that happens Montana will benefit more than other states because we have a small population base and many miles of roads. The recent opening of more federal lands to oil and gas exploration and drilling will help to lower the price of vehicle fuel and mitigate the extra tax burden on drivers.
Modern, horizontal drilling technology allows a single oil well to branch in multiple directions to efficiently reach even small pockets of deep underground oil and gas. New fracking technology allows more oil to be extracted and can reinvigorate older and less productive fields. America leads the world in both horizontal drilling and fracking technology.
Under the Trump presidency the United States has moved from an oil importing nation to an oil exporting nation. That is a breath taking change for those of us who came of age in the 1970's and were told that America's oil was running out and we all had to get used to driving tiny cars or live in cities with mass transit. The bleak picture of a once great country in decline surrounded us. Gas was rationed and long lines formed at dispensing stations. The oil exporting nations formed a cartel, OPEC, and milked American drivers for decades with high prices for fuel. Now that we are an exporter of oil, OPEC power is declining and American drivers are starting to reap benefits. Our roads and infrastructure will get repaired and the price of fuel should stabilize and even decline as more wells come online. "Make America Great Again" was a 2017 campaign slogan that is now bearing fruit for Montana and drivers all across our country.
