AN OPEN LETTER TO THE GLA BOARD
June 18, 2018
I would like to ask the board members how they can approve incomplete, if not faulty minutes, as published on June 14 of their May 7, 2018 board meeting? To wit, item 5.7.1 regarding the group complaint signed by 29 landowners against director Charlotte Mizzi, where the biased Secretary wrote, “Chris Williams read a statement,” and failed to include any reference to what the statement said in whole or in part. As written into the official record of the GLA these minutes reflect nothing of the content of the complaint or the statement I made which is critical to the integrity of the association and its records. I can only presume that this is an intentional act by the Secretary to play down the severity of the facts presented in the complaint and in my statement.
My statement was intended to support the complaint by pointing out to the board that the complaint regarding Mizzi is all about accountability, and I pointed out the duty of directors to hold one another accountable, as well. For the record, the entirety of my statement is as follows:
GLA Board Accountability
I have lived in Glastonbury for ten years...and have been actively following GLA board activities for at least 8 years, during which time I have written and spoken to various boards about accountability as individual directors and as the entire board. Sadly, certain board members past and current are ignorant of even the basic definition of "accountability" and are incapable of serving with integrity. It is those board members who bring complaints from landowners upon themselves and discredit the board as a whole. Furthermore, the board as a whole has proven itself inept in consistently holding all directors accountable, and therefore permitting nearly all complaints to be swept into the proverbial black hole, which is overflowing with unresolved issues.
Following are a couple of definitions and a quote regarding accountability to help guide you:
Accountability: The obligation of an individual or organization to account for its activities, accept responsibility for them, and to disclose the results in a transparent manner. It also includes the responsibility for money or other entrusted property. ~ BUSINESSDICTIONARY.COM
Accountability is a noun that describes accepting responsibility, and it can be personal or very public. A government has accountability for decisions and laws affecting its citizens; an individual has accountability for acts and behaviors. Sometimes, though, taking accountability means admitting you made a mistake. Punishment may result, but accountability shows ownership and a willingness to admit mistakes. ~ VOCABULARY.COM
“ACCOUNTABILITY IS THE PRIME MARKER OF ADULTHOOD. ABSOLVING HUMANS OF ACCOUNTABILITY PUTS THEM IN A STATE OF ARRESTED ADOLESCENCE.”
Accountability applies equally to all directors: To those who blatantly ignore or subvert the governing documents, or otherwise act illegally or inappropriately, and to those directors who hide behind their political correctness or identity politics and either do nothing or support inappropriate behavior.
It is past overdue for this board to stand with integrity and fix this egregious situation.
~ End of Statement ~
These minutes as written are a sham; they are leading, manipulative, incomplete, and overall useless as an official corporate record. In the real world of accountable minutes, it is reasonable to include a brief statement about the content of the collective complaint and number of signers, as well as the statements from landowners for the record. Without at least some mention of the content of the complaint, no one is served, not even the board. If someday the board needs to refer to these minutes to justify their review of this complaint, these minutes will fail them.
I therefore am requesting that the board rescind their approval of the May minutes and include a correction. A quick and easy way to accomplish this would simply be to attach this letter to the revised formal minutes so that the record is complete and clear.
Sincerely,
Chris Williams
