New Traffic Light Installed on 89 and Murphy Lane
Two new stop signs with flashing red LED lights were installed on the corners of Murphy Lane and Route 89 in Emigrant center last week. They replace the old yellow and red flashing light that hung over the center of the road until a storm downed it last spring. The new lights are battery powered and charged with solar panels. They are accompanied by signs stating that "Cross traffic does not stop" and signs 500 feet down and up 89. Notably missing is a yellow flashing light for traffic on 89 warning drivers of the well used intersection and decreased speed limit.
During peak tourist season Murphy Lane drivers can wait 3 to 5 minutes before the intersection is clear. A plethora of road signs and concrete barriers make it difficult to view traffic coming down 89 from Livingston. Drivers have been killed over the years at this intersection. An overhead red/green/yellow traffic control light that stops traffic would better slow traffic and increase driver safety.
The intersection of Dry Creek road and Route 89 by South Glastonbury is even more dangerous. The view up and down 89 is limited because Dry Creek road sits about 5 feet below the level of 89. Dry Creek road needs to be raised at the entrance to 89. A turning lane on 89 for Dry Creek Road is sorely needed as well. Careless drivers often cross the solid yellow line and pass traffic slowing down to turn into Dry Creek road. Fresh tire skid marks frequently appear before the sharp turn as well. In the winter cars often slide off Dry Creek because they make the turn at too high a speed. The old yellow and red overhead flashing light from Emigrant Center would help to alert drivers and could increase safety.
