High South Snow Report Dec. 31, 2018 2:25 PM The current temperature is a frosty 12 degrees above zero at 6,300 feet in High South Glastonbury. Yesterday and last evening we received 6 inches of fresh powder snow. High South roads were plowed due to high winds and drifting on Saturday evening. They have not touched since.
Sagittarius Skyway was a treacherous and slippery set of single tire tracks at 11:15 this morning. Upper Hercules was also quite slippery with snow drifting and creating narrow choke points along the road. Hercules lower than Spectec showed more traffic which packed the unplowed snow. Later this week the temperatures are predicted to be in the high 30's and much of the packed snow will turn to ice unless it is plowed promptly. Hercules to Dry Creek was slippery and the guard rails offered some assurance that at least drivers would not be killed if they slipped off the road. That is a false sense of security though. The guardrail along Suicide Curve is sinking again and slowly becoming a ski ramp. When Jeff Reiderer and Tim Brockett drilled holes in the 6x6 and round wooden poles that hold the guardrails intact they discovered that almost every post had serious wood rot almost all the way through. The posts are 20 years or more older and may not have been pressure treated. Much of the guardrail is rusting and the entire structures are in poor condition.
Dry Creek road was plowed and sanded by Park County. 89 was also plowed, sanded and mainly free of snow.
Drive safely and use extreme caution on all Glastonbury roads. The life you save may be your own.
