Based on $31,250.00 NG Road Maintenance allocation in the 2016 budget.
NOTE: $31,250.00 is allocated in the 2016 budget for North Glastonbury road maintenance. $11,000.00 is for the paved roads and the balance of $20,250.00 is allocated for gravel roads.
North Glastonbury Paved Road Maintenance:
- Clear/create ditches along the sides of Capricorn from Aries Drive to Pisces Way. The west or higher side of the road should be done first to prevent water from flowing downhill and under the pavement.
- Clear existing ditches on other sections of paved road where alligator cracking and/or pot hole repair is apparent.
- Patch the pothole on Capricorn which was discussed at the May 4th, 2016 Road Committee meeting.
North Glastonbury Gravel Road Maintenance:
- Replace broken and missing snow fences.
- Clear culverts and ditches.
- If you use a mini-excavator for digging some ditches please consider digging frost heaved rocks bigger than a basketball that are protruding from the adjoining road surface.
- Address the auto accident problem on Gemini by installing guard rail or rebuilding and/or widening part of the road to make it safer.
- Double Truckloads of road mix – Capricorn(gravel portion) 4 loads, Aquarius Loop 3 loads, Pisces Way 2 loads, Gemini Road to Starlight Lane 2 loads, Venus Way 2 loads, Mercury Lane 1 load, Sirius Drive(gravel portion) 2 loads, Taurus Road 3 loads and GAV Roads 1 load.
- Estimated gravel cost at $350.00 per load = $7,000.00 or $1,892.00 per mile. (3.7 miles of gravel road in North Glastonbury NOT counting Gemini past Starlight Lane and both ends of Caspari).* See note below.
- Grade all gravel roads where new gravel is placed and where road mix gravel already exists.
NOTE: Gemini past Starlight Lane is in bad shape. The unstable base consists of soft dirt and cobbles. Ideally the uphill portion of Gemini should receive a nine inch layer of three inch angular rock which will stabilize the base and provide good drainage. A ditch should be dug alongside the uphill portion of the road so water can drain through the angular base. A three to four inch layer of Durgan Road Mix should be placed over the angular base and graded. This work could easily cost close to $100,000.00. Property owners on Caspari would benefit and they should be asked to donate funds.
Putting down a layer of one inch, washed angular gravel, three to four inches thick is a much lower cost method of stabilizing the road surface and making it easier to plow. That could cost $10,000.00 to $20,000.00. Both suggestions will not fit into the 2016 budget and should be considered separately by the Road Committee and GLA Board.
The total gravel road mileage in North Glastonbury is 4.9 miles. The total paved road mileage is 3.20 miles. See exact figures here.
Road mix gravel comes from Durgan’s quarry. Prices based on the May 4th, 2016 Road Committee meeting figures.
